Editorial Policy

Statement of Editorial Policy

The Bulletin publishes, via the world wide web, original work relevant to the experimental analysis of human behavior; strictly applied work should be sent elsewhere. Types of manuscripts appropriate for submission include Brief Reports, Laboratory Descriptions, Technical Information, Research in Progress, and Member Activities (see Submission Instructions). Brief Reports are peer reviewed. All other types of submissions are reviewed primarily for clarity and appropriateness by the Bulletin's co-editors. In all cases, acceptance of submitted material is at the discretion of the co-editors.

Policy on Submitting Published Bulletin Data to Other Journals

It is the Bulletin's policy that peer-reviewed Brief Reports published on the Bulletin website are final publications. Therefore, the author(s) should not submit the data in Brief Reports to other journals. In contrast, summaries of ongoing research that do not include explicit data presentations, and are posted on the Bulletin website as Research in Progress, are more likely to be considered "unpublished" by other journals and thus more likely to be accepted for review by other journals. If Research-In-Progress material is ultimately submitted elsewhere, authors are encouraged to note in the acknowledgment sections of those submissions that their data, or portions thereof, were briefly described in the Bulletin.

Guidelines for Reviewers

Commentary for the authors should evaluate both the soundness of the research and the adequacy of its presentation. The reviewer recommendation (see below) should be fully justified. In doing so, reviewers should keep the tone of their commentary objective and not overly critical, and offer suggestions for improvement rather than emphasizing the manuscript's shortcomings. The submitted manuscript should be regarded as privileged communication, and should not be cited without the permission of the author(s) or until published. An adequate review should ordinarily require no more than two pages. Reviewers should make an explicit recommendation from the following categories:

Accept: only very minor revision is needed.

Accept with Revision: the manuscript is acceptable if it appears that the reviewer's concerns can be readily addressed.

Revise and Resubmit: substantial changes to the manuscript could make it acceptable, but it will need to go through the peer review process anew.

Not Recommended for Publication: the manuscript is not suitable for the Bulletin.
